Sydney producer Isaac Tichauer is one of the new sensations, his sound, which is a mix of disco, 90s, house and even tropical rhythms is spreading like wildfire through the blogosphere and here is the first proof. He’s been working over the past 6 months on his debut “Devotion” and we can finally enjoy it via French Express.

It is described as “the crusade against terrifyingly bad music knows no boundaries, even money itself, and will continue like so until our way reaches the four corners of the Earth”.

The LP includes 9 tracks, being one of them ‘Doing What I Got’, recently featured on the latest Magic Mixtape#24, so there’s no need for more introduction; click play and enjoy it.

“Devotion” will be released this next July the 31st via French Express.

This post is all about space…starting with the original songs, found on the sophomore album by the Brooklyn based instrumental post-rock band named Spaces till the contribution of the experient romanian musician Shelby Cinca. Shelby under his dance/electronica persona – Triobelisk, picked the first 2 songs of “Nothing Exists But Atoms And The Void” album and created a new essential. Triobelisk defines himself as “Mysterion of the Zoneplex, explorer, documenter of sound, lost pilot with electronic genesis since 2007″, making expectable to go out of this world everytime one listens to his music. Actually “Hadley Edge” feels like futuristic-3000′-post-punk and if that doesn’t really mean anything to you, i’d say it sounds somewhere in between Kavinsky-”Night Call” and Daft Punk (youtube link) The End Of The Line – “Thron” (OST). Here’s a freebie i’ll definitely have on my playlist for spacial traveling.

Hard to believe we are already in October. My favourite season of the year, the summer, passed by in a flash. Gladly, the days still remain hot here in Portugal, and i just remember to write about one of my favourite artist revelations of the year.

Let me introduce you to the world of Michael, A Gap Between, beat maker, whisle blower, moon walker and mind reader from rainy Portland, Oregon. Despite being surrounded by precipitation, he produces trully warm music, ensuring you summer time all year. I stumbled on Michael’s soundcloud page some months ago, and right from the start i know that an “eternal” follow was about to happen.

Someone that describes his sounds as ‘Metropolitan 80s Chic‘ is sure to have my full attention. The idyllic melodies, urban soundscapes and unique vocals are all mixed together with hip-hop beats, taking his style to another level, like a bridge between some ancient culture and some futuristic society. It really is special. Makes you feel like all your problems are gone for a moment and all that matters is your simbiose with music and nature.

Michael is preparing his first 6 song EP, ‘Summer Nightrunner‘, to be released on Nueva Forma, an eclectic music label also from Portland (you can find some really good artists there, so peek around). Meanwhile you can listen to some originals by making a visit to his soundcloud page. Last week, precisely on September 27, 2011, he released an exclusive track for the Hearing Gold Compilation, ’Midnight Cassete‘. A free download is possible from the Hearing Gold bandcamp.

It’s all well and good to like this new breed of disco-synth-electronica that has been coming our way hard and fast, but how many times have you stopped to appreciate the sampled tracks that have inspired these modern day tunes?

I decided for my first post on Golden Scissors, I should start off with the roots of disco, and show all you scissoring fiends where the magic starts. The biggest tracks sample disco tunes, many of which you would know.

BUT before you get your keyboard warrior gear on and start ripping into me about not giving artists the credit they deserve, blah blah blah, shut the fuck up and continue reading. It takes a lot of hard work, a dreamy imagination and bucket loads of creativity to listen to a track and sample them correctly.

In my opinion sampling is recycling in it’s most beautiful of forms. It  just shows that music, if made well, will never be discarded, nor forgotten. It may once have been a song no one would have ever had listened to, but in 10, 20 even 30 years time, some budding musician might pick it up, find unutterable amazement in it and rebirth it.

I wasn’t totally aware of the immensity of sampling, because I’m a stupid girl. My hot boyfriend introduced me, and I feel like, to some extent, it’s grown my interest in music like a budding cancer.

Ryan Grieve and Leo Thomson make the Aussi duo that goes under the name Canyons. They started to work seperatly and joined at first not to produce together but to create Hole In The Sky Records instead. But the inevitable happened and short after the label started they’ve released the first Canyons EP named Lovermore. The duo went on releasing the first EP of Tame Impala as well as remixing for the later, Ladyhawke and Juan McLean.

Though it was already perceptible that something really different was coming under the radar, Australia kept a little autistic to Canyons work. Stir crossed seas and Canyons released “Blue Snakes” on Parisian Label I’m A Cliché and “Fire Eyes” by DFA(2009), with an extra remix by Jacques Renault.

In 2009 Canyons signed for the Australian Modular Records and started to work on their debut album, expected to come out late this year (November).

Canyons are one of those bands which sound is unclassifiable. Ryan and Leo have a broad taste in music and deny to be retained on specific genre, instead they use all their preferable elements of different genres to compose a very distinct sound. Contradiction gains a consistent form in Canyons work and i’d say it’s what i enjoy most about this band. Believe me when i say that you’ll be uncapable of predicting what comes with the next track.

Expect mostly psychadelic and hazy elements joined with balearic, tropical as well as 70′s indie and disco. Sometimes downtempo others pretty up lifting, there’s a little bit of everything.
Personally, i must confess not to be quite impressed with first Canyon steps but, after listening to the first single of Keep Your Dreams “My Rescue” released early 2011 and the latest teaser for the album opening tracks “Circadia/Under A Blu Sky” i completely surrender!

I’m starting to have that happy feeling that summer music releasing letargy is over… DFA has definetely not made a pit stop,  keeping on throwing out amazing stuff. This time it’s the Fall On Your Sword EP named “The First Time I Saw Jupiter”.
Fall On Your Sword (FOYS) is not just a band, long time composers Phil Mossman (co-founder of LCD Soundsystem) and Will Bates gathered forces with Lucy Alper (executive producer) to compose a multimedia group based in Brooklyn.

FOYS first gained significant notice with their music for a Nomis football boots commercial, which won a Gold Clio Award, as well as a Gold Lion at Cannes. After that, the group produced humorous original clips while continuing to do commercial work (for the likes of ESPN, Google, VH1, and Absolut) and branching into films, beginning with Kitao Sakurai’s “Aardvark”.

In 2011 a big turn came to FOYS while scoring for Mike Cahill‘s movie “Another Earth”, presented on Sundance Festival this year with very positive critics. The Director Jason Reitman said, “I found my new favorite band at Sundance.” while James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem quipped, “Fall On Your Sword are quite possibly the coolest thing on the planet at the moment.” The soundtrack has a very cosmic 80s retro-scifi feel. Arpeggiated synthesizer patches combine with strings and voice to create giant soundscapes and semi-danceable beats, which are juxtaposted against brief solo piano vignettes and ambient textures.

Right from this work came the “The First Time I Saw Jupiter” EP released by DFA on July. This EP contains 2 extended tracks from the original soundtrack and a video. The first track is the one that gives name to this EP and it’s a master piece. Only one word comes to my mind while listening to it…EPIC…the way it’s been composed, the way it sounds and the way i feel about it. The perfect tailored connection between incredibly beautiful drum patterns with spacial and ambient sounds as well as effects that bring outrageous bursting moments, makes this song one of the best of the kind that i’ve heard in the last years. Suddenly i remember Flash Gordon’r soundtrack by Queen or to be more contemporaneous i’d say that, if you like the most dark and orchestrated side of Daft Punk then, you’ll be in chains with this song for long long time. But Daft Punk isn’t the only “connection” i find. While listening to “Rhodas Theme” i suddenly have a recall on the less popish side of Chemical Brothers.

How did i ended up referring some of my all time favorite producers in a sole post? Is it because they all have scored for movies? I don’t think so…The main reason is that they all made music that cannot be consumed or erased by time or music to come. It’s heritage!!!

Overall “The First Time I Saw Jupiter” EP has a strong character only possible of accomplishment by great composers. It’s not just songs…these are full stories! And like a little child i don’t mind to listen to the same ones over and over again.

Today i feel motivated to write about things i can’t buy (unfortunately)…

Dan Levy and Olivia Bouyssou Merilahti compose the french/finnish duo named “The Dø”. They both come from the classical branch of music and started working together in 2005, making music for cinema, dance and theatre. Still in 2005 “The Dø” released their fist EP which included “The Bridge is Broken”, but it was only in 2008 that the band released a full album of originals named “Mouthful” (Cinq/7 record label). The sublime voice of Olivia gathered with the extraordinary talent of the multi instrumentalist Dan Levy got France on “her” knees, taking the album directly to number 1 in music charts. The extensive use of different traditional instruments such as violins, piano, cello, trompets, contrabass mixed with electronic elements and with tribal like drums, makes it hard to place this band in a genre box but easy to fall in love with.

2011 is the sophmore year for “The Dø” and with it comes the amazing “Both Ways Open Jaws” a 13 cuts album released in March by Cinq/7. Still in August, i’m not afraid to personally place this work as one of the best 10 albums of the year. “The Dø” got even more exquisite in their production. This album it’s an anti boredom pill, being every track profoundly different from the previous but somehow composing an interesting continuum. It’s a mature work with more textures and melodic experimentalism in which Olivia’s voice shows up with more skins then ever. If “The Bridge is Broken” was the highlight of “Mouthfull” this time is hard to make a single choice. It’s a world in which you don’t want to loose a single moment. I could spend many more lines about the reasons why this album is on repeat inside these four walls…is it the urban tribal ritual of “Slippery Slope”? or maybe the Doors featuring Nina Persson feeling i get with “Gonna Be Sick!”? or even to know that while we dance “Bohemian Dances” nothing can go wrong? …well, i’m sure it’s all this and much more. To be honest i even like more the folkish elements then i previously expected!

As if it wasn’t enough of good music for a sole post, there’s more. Cinq/7 has just released a Remixes EP of “The Dø” with 3 tracks from Trentemoller, Vitalic and C-Berg…OMG! Is it Christmas already? This is just the cherry on top of the cake.
Vitalic takes “Slippery Slope” to another level with his electro touch, while Trentemoller picks “Too Insistent”, and as expected, made it even more kind to the heart, making one of the best songs of the year so far. C-Berg the swedish producer is well known by his work with names such as The Knife, Bjork, Fever Ray, Planningtorock and Florence and the Machine so one can’t expect less than another awesome remix, this time from the original “Dust it Off”.

NOW, can anyone explain me why the hell can’t i buy this EP?????? I won’t ever understand the reasons why digital music still has physical barriers…
I can only hope that someone from a lucky country offers me this EP for Christmas!

We’re already used to Joe’s smooth and clear drum patterns and well tailored synths, so there’s no considerable risk in pushing the button…

Jón Pór Birginsson, well known as the charismatic vocalist and the bow guitar player of the legendary Icelandic band Sigur Rós has, after 16 years, decided to go solo. As Jónsi, he released (XL Recordings) his first album in April 2010, named “Go”, which was a success. A little less low keyed than previously projected “Go” turned out to be kind of upbeat and, till certain level, poppy too. For this album Jónsi could count on fabulous collaborations such as the ones by the visual artist and musician Alex Somers, the percussionist Samuli Kosminen and the contemporary classical composer Nico Muhly. With all this exquisite resources one can’t expect less than huge amounts of pleasure!
In April 2011 it was released “Go Out” EP. Let’s say it is the obvious and desired extension of the previous album. This work contains 4 tracks (2 remixes of “Go Do plus” 1 of “Tornado” and 1 of “Around Us”) remixed by Klive (aka úlfur, the bassist from the ‘go’ tour last year), F**k Buttons, Wld Ptch (aka xl record label boss, Richard Russell & ‘go’ mixer Tom Elmhurst) and the amazing Bogdan Raczynski, which has previously worked with Bjork and has lived homeless in the streets of Tokyo…as if it wasn’t enough, he can even teach you how to cook!!!!!!!

This is not Disco nor Electro, House or whatever…this is Jónsi and you get Icelandic love all over!

Purple é mais um alter ego para Luis Dourado, previamente como metade dos Nimai e ainda como Labrador agora assume uma nova “identidade” e consequentemente uma nova sonoridade. Purple começou a “desenhar” o EP em Berlim no final de 2010 e actualmente de regresso ao Porto completa este trabalho que se apresenta com tonalidades algo escuras e sombrias mas ao mesmo tempo com grande suavidade e beleza. Parece-me uma viagem, e como seria de esperar passamos por vários “espaços” e “momentos” com todas as experiências que isso implica. Ás vezes melancólico outras sensual, é um trabalho com componentes de electrónica experimental, dub, épico, espacial e ambient.
Luis Dourado juntamente com Tiago e o Ivo Pacheco (Ivvvo, Baliac, Your Sister, etc…) fundou a Terrain Ahead, uma etiqueta de música electrónica portuguesa e independente para dar visibilidade à produção electrónica portuguesa. É na Terrain Ahead que saí o primeiro registo de Purple de download gratuito.

We Trust é o projecto de André Tentugal um jovem realizador do Porto que resolveu enveredar pelo universo musical e, eu diria que da melhor maneira. Como realizador já assinou vários trabalhos nomeadamente telediscos para Mind da Gap e X-Wife entre outros. Como músico o futuro revela-se bastante promissor tendo em conta a qualidade do primeiro trabalho- Time (Better not Stop), retirado do album de originais – “These Old Countries”, a ser lançado em Setembro.
Todo o álbum conta com letras e arranjos do próprio André, embora com colaborações externas na área instrumental, como seja de realçar o papel do baixista Fernando Santos dos X-wife. A produção está a cargo de Zé Nando Pimenta e o lançamento será feito pela discográfica Meifumado Fonogramas.
Para já, é possível deliciar-mo-nos com os singles “Time (Better not Stop)” e “Them Lies”. The realçar ainda o trabalho do realizador sueco Rickard Bengtsson, que dá a textura visual exacta para uma música plena de beleza e equilíbrio.

We Trust is André Tentugal’s music project. This young film director, that has already worked in videoclips for several bands as X-Wife, Mind da Gap among others, has now turned himself to the music universe. As a musician we can expect a bright future taking his first single as an example. “Time (better not Stop)” is the first single coming out of what will be We Trust début álbum (These Old Countries) to be released by Meifumado Fonogramas this September.
Lyrics and arrangement are André’s full work but there is some external collaboration mainly in instruments. The bass player from X-Wife Fernando Santos has a main role in chords.
The album is being produced by Zé Nando Pimenta and the amazing videoclip for “Time (Better not Stop)” has the signature of the promissing young swedish director Rickard Bengtsson, who managed to input the right visual texture to the already beautiful and full of harmony song!

Don’t know much about Of Oceans but one thing is sure…like a big fat wave, this sound can lift you till you see the world from above and then, take you back soflty to ground level to better apreciate it. Peter Bosch is the man behind this project, he’s from Detroit and like a rabbit coming out of the hat, he started to produce beautifully and at full steam. Three quality EP’s since July 2010 is something (i could do it but i’d be arrested for attempting to world culture).
Of Oceans work is full of ambience, tranquility, smooth electro and sleepy beats, some experimentalism and surprising moments give to this work unique features. Samples chosen by Peter are like the right Cinderella’s shoe, as it is quite obvious in “In Love, Not Limbo”, the track from Of Oceans EP in which we can live Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Maps” in a completely different way!
Well i don’t have to explain anything more, ’cause all tracks of this project are FREE, so that you can enjoy for yourself…if you want to give more to this post you can, and Golden Scissors would love to ear from you!

Juan de Guillebon or DyE (as you’ll listen from him) is about to release “Taki 183″ his first LP (Tigersushi records) on 13th June. Juan was a long time bass player in parisian scene working with Joakim (don’t forget to check DyE’s remix of “Forever Young”), Bot’Ox and Maestro. In 2007 DyE pursued the goal of being anonymous and popular at the same time, under that scope he released several musics on web platform without a word. Later DyE contributed the track ‘Nike’ for the Tigersushi 10 Year Anniversary release and after that some more like “Crista d’Acier” and “Dark White”. A few months ago Tigersushi released DyE’s “Fantasy” EP with remixes from Clement Meyer, Remote and Jackpot, all worthwhile.

All of the previous mentioned tracks are part of Taki 183 but this doesn’t mean it’s a compilation album, as DyE himself says: “is a collection of tracks to create my sci-fi universe: each track is the color of a mood, made of a time, experience and loss.”

“Taki 183″ was recorded using analogue equipment such as Roland TR606, Moog Source and a Korg Poly Six into Pro-Tools, and it feels like (i learned this expression in weather casts and i love it!!!) electro-pop, with spectral elements and “indie”!

While we all wait for the full album, let’s fantasize a little!

Joakim…i’d be a full if i’d make a long post and believe you’d actually spend time reading it instead of going directly for the juicy part of it…Joakim’s MUSIC! Everytime this name bumps on my face, with a new track name in front of it, i clap my hands as a little kid in front of a chocolate cascade.

After the awesome indie- latin hybrid “Hearbreak Samba” came the fabulous “India”, Mitzi‘s original, fabulously remixed by the elegant Joakim! One can’t expect less then addiction and with addiction comes withdrawal syndrome…Aware of that, Monsieur Joakim feed us with more “drug” to keep us “Forever Young”! This EP is the first single coming out, of the so expected new Joakim’ album to be released on September 2011 by Tigersushi records.

The “wizard” is back! Under The Crystal Ark’s mask, Gavin Russom “Touch” us again.  This new EP, launched by DFA as we speak, it’s tailored  to success in different grounds from those we’re used to when recalling  Crystal Ark’s previous releases.

Russom is a man-machine, synths are probably an almost “carnal” extension of himself. Aside from master their use he also builds and customises analog synths for his own profit as well as for others, including LCD Soundsystem, UNKLE and Black Dice.

Since 2005 Russom has released several works under the names of Black Meteoric Star,The Crystal Ark and under his given name in collaboration with Delia Gonzalezr. As most artists Russom’s different names mean different artistical layers, and in this matter i’d say that Crystal Ark is the most exquisite one. You may recall “The city that never sleeps” a 2010 12′ awesome track (if you’re looking for long hypnotizing tracks Crystal Ark is your thing!!) that marks a turn on the previous goth techno style to something way more colourful and invigoratingly new! Under Brasil’s influence he gets new thinking over drums and funkiness. Add some 90′s Acid and psychadelic as well as the devilish voice of Viva Ruiz…and there you go… a track to stuck your player on repeat.

Today The Crystal Ark goes further…i’d say it’s becoming dangerously appealing. Full of polyrhythmic percussive  layers coupled with multiple basslines the track gets funky all the way. Russom and Viva Ruiz contribute with vocals to pump even more seduction into it! This is the first time that The Crystal Ark features a life band into his recordings (Electroputas member Jaiko Suzuki and artist Sokhna Heathyre Mabin (backing vocals); LCD/!!!’s Tyler Pope (bass); previous collaborator Alberto Lopez (percussion); and producer/multi-instrumentalist/LCD contributor Matt Thornley) …yes you can feel the difference!

To keep it simple (at least to myself)…there’s less acid, less techno, more funk and wayyyy more Disco!

This is a great pleasure for me…FM Belfast is one of my favorite bands for the last 3 years. In 2005, what would later be FM Belfast, born by the hands of Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson and Lóa Hlín Hjálmtýsdóttir  an act of love for friends. They’ve made a song for friends that spread way more then they’ve expected. But it was only when Árni Vilhjálmsson and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason (Borko, Múm) joined the band that FM Belfast, as we know, really happened. This is not a static band, their live appearences can join as much as 40 members on stage (WWOOO!!!) including Sveinbjörn Pálsson, Björn Kristjánsson (Borko), Halli Civelek, Svanhvít Tryggvadóttir, Unnsteinn Manuel Stefánsson (Retro Stefson) and Þórður jörundsson (Retro Stefson).

In 2007 FM Belfast colaborated with Kasper Bjorke to produce “Back and Spine an amazing song that projected even more the band, taking them to a dead end, in which they had to produce a full album other wise fans would commit suicide !!! Finally in 2008 came “How to Make Friends”(Worl Champion Records) an amazing album fully produced by the band including art work. From this came the acclaimed  ”Underwear” also released separetly with  remixes by Frederik Olufsen, Brynjar and an unplugged cover by Prins Póló; and the explicit “Lotus”, with extra cuts by the amazing Kasper Bjorke as well as by Gaea and Antipop!

If you’ve clicked some of the links up there i’m sure you’re already attached to FM Belfast , but if you explore all their work, including their remixes for Kasper Bjorke (Doesn’t Matter Now), Norton (“Your Balcony”), Miri (“Hamingjulagid”) and Múm (“Sing a Long”) you’ll fall in LOVE! And that’s what FM Belfast is about … Love and Friendship! They are funny, uplifting, brightly sarcastic, adventurous and they’re placed in a genre hard  or even impossible to define…something around indie-pop-electronic-funny-weirdo thing! There’s no Volcano, Bankruptcy, or McDonald’s desertion that can’t stop these guys from doing what they want.

2011 is the sophomore year for FM Belfast and they “…Don’t Want To Go To Sleep Either” (Morr Music records). Scheduled to be released on the 3rd June, this album contains 11 tracks among which there’s “New Year” (right on time!!!) and the cover album song (released in EP at 6th May). You can’t miss it …the kinda of subpop that you need right now! The cool percussion gathered with guitar riffs and ear blowing synths assembled with boy/girl duets over awakening lyrics are the 2011′s refreshment I NEED!!!!
